How to care for your skin when exercising…

With the start to a new year bringing us thoughts of resolutions and the start of new habits and regimes, exercise can be at the forefront of many a brain.

If you followed my recent YouTube challenge #projectclearskin, then you’ll know that exercise is an important part of improving your skin health. What can we do to ensure that our skin stays in top condition whilst we’re working out? Here are my answers to some related questions…

Q. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY SKIN FOR EXERCISING? SHOULD I NOT WEAR MAKEUP?

A. Prior to working out, ideally you should wash your skin with a mild, non-drying cleanser and apply a lightweight oil-free lotion. It’s important that you have the skin clean free of foundation makeup prior to working out since the skin, when warmed, will act like a sponge sucking in dirt, grime, make up and chemicals (Eye makeup and lipstick are fine to wear.) Should you really feel the need to wear foundation, try mineral-based powders as they are sweat-resistant and won’t clog the pores. We love the CoffeeBerry perfecting minerals.

Q. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO WEAR MOISTURISER?

A. When you exercise, you lose so much water and salts (by evaporation) out of the skin, leaving the skin ‘dehydrated’. ‘Dehydrated’ skin increases surface lines and causes skin cells to die prematurely, leading to premature ageing. Dead skin cells will build up causing the pores to clog. By using a lightweight moisturiser you will help to retain the water in the skin. If you are exercising outdoors don’t forget you must ensure you use a sunscreen. I love Elena Rubins Carpe Diem.

Q. SHOULD YOU AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE DURING A WORKOUT?

A. Absolutely! Use a soft, clean towel to mop your brow. Also the equipment at the gym breed bacteria, so it’s best to keep your hands off your skin as you don’t want to introduce bacteria to the skin which can result in new break outs, or the spreading of existing break outs. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before hitting the showers and applying your cleanser to your face.

Q. HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER BEFORE AND AFTER A WORKOUT? & WHAT ARE THE ‘SKIN HEALTH’ REASONS?

A. Since you lose so much water from perspiration, it’s crucial that you replace it by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after workouts. This can also help keep the skin dehydrated. I like to add some Cucumber slices to my water bottle as the electrolytes help to retain more hydration and will sometimes treat myself to a Coconut water as a post workout drink or a big mug f green tea.

Q. HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SKIN AFTER I WORKOUT?

A. Gently cleanse the skin with a wash. I love the Vitage revitalising facial cleanser which is effective at removing any traces of make up, sweat and dead cells. Follow up with a moisturiser which contains ingredients to help to calm and constrict the delicate capillaries which would have been busy during your work out. Camomile, acerola cherry and green tea will all give the skin this support.
