Pregnancy Acne…

One of the first signs that led me to suspect I could be pregnant was the huge, painful, cystic spots that had come back to plague my chin & jawline.
Although I’ve been an Acne sufferer on & off since the age of 17, my once problematic skin was under control so this was out of the ordinary for me & one of the fascinating ways in which our skin really is a window of what goes on within our bodies.

I was a bit miffed as, while pregnancy can leave some lucky ladies looking positively glowing, for me, all that extra hormonal activity was having the opposite effect!
My one blessing that at least I was equipped with the know how to keep things controlled & on the right path to healing.

Acne can be the No. 1 skin problem to hit women during pregnancy but there are also a variety of other bumps, rashes and changes in skin colour and tone that can occur as well, most of them due to hormone activity.

Let’s start with those pesky outbreaks though…

Pregnancy Acne: What to Do

Even if it’s been years since you’ve seen a spotty outbreak, don’t be surprised if pregnancy brings out a bumper crop, particularly around your mouth and chin.
These are the most common areas for acne to occur during pregnancy since this is believed to relate to female hormones and if you don’t treat it right away, it can continue until you deliver, and sometimes even after baby is born.

What I do, recommend and use in my skin lounges, are sulphur-based topical products, as well as those containing glycolic, Lactic or Salicylic acids. For an ‘at-home microdermabrasion’ treatment and a natural approach, I recommend to my pregnant clients to try mixing some organic goats or cows milk powder into a paste and apply it like a mask leaving it for 10-15 minutes. The natural acids will gently break down the pore blocking dead cells and can even out the texture too.

Being pregnant has really helped on my quest to truly listen to & respect my body & the amazing work it is doing. There are so many do’s and don’t during pregnancy so why shouldn’t you be able to enjoy a relaxing, results driven facial? We treat our clients right up to their due date ensuring that they are comfortable throughout, elevating their legs, raising their head and providing an array of pillows. Whatever they and their baby needs.

Above all get some great advice & don’t focus on the negative aspects of having these spots. You & your body are working so hard so try to relax, stay positive & know this doesn’t have to be a lasting problem.

What also works: switching to a foundation for oily skin, or using loose powder mineral makeup. Both have oil-blotting properties and won’t irritate skin with acne.

You can also use a mattifying primer underneath your makeup to soak up excess oil. I love 100 % mineral make up products which are natural, light, heal and conceal outbreaks. We apply these at the end of each of our U & your skin facials.
